Day 9: San Francisco

Day 9: San Francisco

August 3rd: we left the car at the apartment and caught a bus into downtown.

Having disembarked at Union Square, we planned to visit the Contemporary Jewish Museum, check out some galleries, walk over to Chinatown for some dim sum, take the trolley down to Fisherman’s Wharf before catching the bus back to the apartment. Another full day. Photo by Blake.

The Contemporary Jewish Museum was fantastic. The building is a combination of a 1907 gas and electric power station with a recent Daniel Libeskind-designed addition. Photo by Blake.

The museum was hosting an excellent exhibition on loan from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. SFMOMA is currently closed for expansion, but has organized satellite exhibitions around the city. The show at CJM was called Beyond Belief: 100 Years of the Spiritual in Modern Art, and was curated from SFMOMA’s collection. Pictured above are works by Teresita Fernandez and Mark Rothko. And here’s Sarah revisiting a different cast of a Kiki Smith sculpture she first experienced at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1999 (right). Photos by Sam and Blake.

On the plaza outside the Contemporary Jewish Museum were several sculptures from a body of work Isamu Noguchi made at Gemini GEL. The Fine Arts Center purchased a Noguchi sculpture called Mountains Forming (pictured at right in the FAC galleries) from this series a couple years ago with the help of the Bain Family. It was nice to see other pieces related to the one in the FAC collection. Photos by Blake.

Next we popped into several galleries before a walk through Chinatown. Photo by Blake.

There we had some delicious dim sum. Unfortunately, Sam’s food allergies prevented him from partaking of the gluteny, eggy culinary delights…

…so we found him some yummy chicken feet. Surprisingly, he decided he’d wait for some seafood. Photos by Blake.

Powell Street cable car turnaround. Apparently, it’s so easy, you can simultaneously talk on the phone and turn the car. Photo by Blake.

Now there’s some crab-alicious goodness that Sam can eat. Photo by Blake.

Sea lions at Fisherman’s Wharf. This place was way too crowded for our taste, so we didn’t stay here long before wandering back along the Embarcadero into downtown. Photo by Blake.

Along the way, we found this lovely little park in which to hang out for a while. Photo by Blake.
